Golf Club At Johnson Ranch, The, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Queen Creek, Arizona.
The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch was designed by Kenny Watkins in 1997 as a challenging par 72 championship course set at the base of the San Tan Mountains. The front side is a classic desert golf experience while the back nine plays in and through the majestic, cactus filled mountainside.
The par-72 championship course is nothing short of an opportunity that is well worth the price of admission; and at 7,142 yards, it's nothing short, period. For all the course's 137 slope rating suggests, Johnson Ranch has a surprisingly softer side. Although it is categorized as a desert course, there is grass from tee to green. The greens are bent grass and the fairways are Bermuda with Rye overseed.
The front nine boasts lush, wide open fairways and generous landing areas, well suited for the player that likes to live dangerously off the tee. The back nine winds through the base of the San Tan Mountains with strategically placed bunkers and undulating greens. Those who know the course continually comment on the beautiful vistas offered on the back nine holes, which overlook the valley.

Visiting this area and found one of my childhood friends Steve L, lives on the #15 hole. Made the connection, got a tee time to relive memories and play a beautiful layout. Even though it’s an golfing community layout, an average player can keep it between the houses and hit the wide fairways. With yardages from 7,162yd/72.7/130 down to 3,423yd/62.7/101 the seven (7) tee boxes, offer all levels of play. We chose the Whites at 6,171yd/67.8/114 with elevation changes, fairway shots to elevated greens were tough. Great conditions from tee to green today, made the trip worth while. Front 9 is mostly straight forward with generous landing areas, good size greens that are firm and smooth. No lack of sand traps/grass bunkers protecting greens, so get your yardages correct. I found that 1-2 extra club was needed, even though I had course marked yardages matching my GPS. Back 9 had some longer forced carries (150yds) that looked worse than they really were. Many holes had great views from the elevated tees that you don’t have in the courses on the northwest side of Phoenix. Next time we’ll pick the Blue tees at 6,,696yd/70.2/120 and take the challenge up one more notch. I ended up shooting 41/41 w/33 putts and made another golfing/friendship memory with my childhood buddy, Thanks Steve. If you’re in the area, don’t pass up the chance to play here and take in the views.

Compliments to the ground crew for the improvements made over tha last few years. The dormant bermuda rough next to the dark green fairways is a nice contrast.

The course sold way too many tee times PLUS started a shotgun tournament when we were 6 holes into the round. By the 9th hole, 5 4-somes had backed up and I quit at the turn. This is the second time I have played here and, if not for the free round of golf they gave me for the hassel, I would not go back.

The weather was a little hot but no one was in front or behind us so the pace of play was excellent.

The back nine is the Jewel of the course. Not long, but great scenery throught the mountainous desert.

The staff puts to many golfers on the course, every 7 minutes, and play gets backed up. I mentioned this to the starter and his response was it's "the golfers fault". I see it being a marshal and clubhouse problem. No wants to play a 6 hour round of golf.

Back again to play with my childhood friend Steve on this sunny 90 degree day to play his course again. With the six (6) tee boxes from 7,162yds down to 3,423yds we choose the Whites 2,960/3,211 /67.8 / 114 with an Par 36/36. Front 9 still has some great hill top views with #4 396yd par 4 being the photo taken above. With the overseeding it was fully green but for some brown spots where the sprinkler doesn’t reach. Fairways were firm today but good full short grass to hit from. All of the traps had heavy sand, raked with an firm bottom. Greens are firm, green, smooth and rolling to a 9-10.....just the way we like them. Back 9 runs through the housing area a little more and seems tighter to the eye from the tee box. No holes really stick out, but the mostly elevated deserved respect for yardages and carry required. Ended up shooting 41/40 with 34 putts, laughing and sharing old memories...with golfing keeping the bond alive. It’s not always about how great a course is....but what is shared on it. Thanks again Steve for setting it up.
